The holiday season is always particularly humbling for our deputies. We often receive an outpouring of Christmas cards, snacks and people simply stopping to say hello and Merry Christmas. It means a lot to us that you think to include us in your holidays, and we simply wanted to thank you all for the tremendous support you give us. ... See moreSee less

Last night was the Annual Emergency Response Team (ERT) Christmas Dinner. Realized that this year marks 20 years since the team leadership recognized the importance and benefit of having trained Tactical Dispatchers on scene as part of the team. Started out with just 2 of us, now we have a cadre of 6 staff to pull from whenever ERT is activated. They handle communications, documentation and resource gathering for that specific incident while the 911 Center handles the day-to-day calls. Beyond ERT, the Incident Tactical Dispatch (INTD) team also performs the same duties for large fires and other incidents as well. ... See moreSee less

This is not a picture from today. The weather is surprisingly pleasant right now. But it's Kansas, so we're always a few minutes away from a random snowstorm, right? Or Mother Nature might toss in a random 80-degree December day. Who knows? But since the weather IS cooperating, now's a great time to get your vehicle ready BEFORE the weather takes a turn. Some advice:

▪️ Put together an emergency kit: While you're out holiday shopping, pick up a few items to have in your car just in case. They make great gifts for new drivers, too. A few recommendations: a flashlight, blanket, water, cell phone charger, ice scraper. There's a lot of other great tools to keep around, but even just a few is a better start than none at all.

▪️ Prep your vehicle: As the temperature sinks, check your tire pressure, look them over for condition, and inspect your spare. You might also have your battery, windshield wipers and washer fluid checked, among other car maintenance, to ensure you're in good shape before hitting the road.

▪️ Drive safely: Road conditions change and deteriorate rapidly when weather arrives. Slowing down is the big one. Give yourself plenty of space to brake. And, you know, keeping eyes on the road is an awesome idea regardless of the weather. You can find highway updates and closures on www.kandrive.gov.

This past year, the county commission signed a memorandum of understanding to provide increased funding for emergency medical service grants in our community. The purpose of these grants was to give a boost to our local Fire/EMS agencies and their ability to provide coverage across the county. A year later, here's a look at how that funding has been used:

🚒 Burrton Consolidated Fire District 5: The department hired a full-time paramedic this past year, and have been able to increase stipends.

🚒 Halstead Fire/EMS: The department recently moved a part-time EMT that was hired into a full-time ALS position.

🚒 Hesston Fire/EMS: The department hired two full-time firefighter/EMTs, providing more coverage and improved response times.

We deeply appreciate the work of our local first responders and their commitment to prioritizing community safety. We had an awesome day packing up boxes of food for our community at the Dillons Distribution Center in Goddard for our First Responders Holiday Helpers program. We are sincerely thankful for everyone who helped spread the word and contribute to this tremendous initiative. Thanks to your support, several families in our community who are needing a little help this holiday season will have boxes delivered right to their door by our local first responders. A great way to start the holiday season!Photos from Harvey County Sheriff's Office's post ... See moreSee less
